I love to get inspired by other girl bosses and entrepreneurs. Right now I’m following Myleik Teele on almost everything because she’s dope and she inspires me. She wrote on Instagram,
“Each new level requires greater focus.”
I love when successful people remind us that they still have so much more to learn and to grow because we get caught thinking that when we reach a certain level we’ve made it, so the work is done.
So, how do we make 2017 a successful year?
I want us all to embrace good habits that will help us start businesses, get a promotion, or simply live life more fully.
I want you to be that creative, driven person you strive each year to be, but sometimes just fall a little short. Sometimes it is a lack of confidence in ourselves and abilities or a lack of knowledge of how to get to where we want to be. But many times it starts with us not believing in ourselves and hindering our own growth to get to our goals.
Or maybe you are becoming that person you want to be and now it’s time to refocus and get to the next level.
That’s why I want us to embrace new or strengthen old habits so we can get to where we yearn to be. Because it is possible and it starts within us.
10 Good Habits To Embrace
1. Live Purposefully and Mindfully
We all want to live a life of purpose. We were blessed with the gift of life, so I think it is only right that we make something of it. Some people were blessed with a gift from an early age that they work their entire life to cultivate. Others find their purpose later in life, but when they do they latch on to it. I have found that dance is one my purposes in life because it feeds my soul, and I am motivated to do it everyday.
To live mindfully means we are aware of what is happening in the present moment to ourselves and our surroundings. It also means being aware of the positive things. Instead of dwelling that you don’t have something or have not reached where we want to be, we can feel grateful that we have two hands that can type posts or hold our loved ones. Take a moment to be grateful for the little things in life and try to stop dwelling on things that are out of your reach.
2. Set Goals and Think Big
This seems like a no brainer by now, but it is so important. Set goals for every aspect of your life not just the most obvious ones. Set goals in your fitness and health, career, relationships, and personal growth. Start small and specific; you don’t need 100 goals because most likely you won’t get too all of them. You don’t need to think about step 20 before you take action on step 1.
You can set a smaller amount of goals, but that doesn’t mean your goals should be small. Think big and make 2017 the year we do not limit ourselves to thinking small. These will most likely be your long term goals. If you aim for 100% and you get 70%, that is so much better than getting nothing because you never went for it.
3. Embrace Knowledge- Books and Podcasts
Learning does not end in the classroom, so please do not think because you are out of school your learning needs to end. No, this means you actually need to put more effort into embracing as much new knowledge as possible because it’s not given to us anymore. This means to read new books and listen to podcasts or Tedtalks. There literally is a book or podcast on every topic you want to learn more about. And if there is not then you make one!
In addition, the more you read the better writer you will become. So, if you do own a blog, it will make your content so much better which results in a bigger audience and more money.
This is definitely a big goal of mine because I make the excuse that I don’t have time to read books for pleasure with school. However, this is an excuse because I don’t make time.
If you find yourself saying I don’t have time, check to see if you are just not making time.
You want to know how I got my book list for 2017? I listened to a podcast I spoke about in my last post What You Need To Do Before The Year Ends, and I got some amazing book ideas. I wouldn’t have found these ideas if I didn’t listen to the podcast, and I know when I read many of those books, it will take me and my blog to the next level. Knowledge fosters more knowledge, and you can never stop learning.
4. Take Care of Your Body
If you are busy bee that gets consumed with work or family, do not allow it to overcompensate for your health! Our health and well being is more important that any responsibilities in our life. Because without us being strong and healthy, there will be no one to manage the business or take care of the family.
So, drink more water and stay active. It’s easier for me to stay active as a dancer, but I have to even continue working out on my breaks to make sure my body is in its best shape. I don’t drink enough water, and I am always trying to do better at this. Staying hydrated is so important because you will get sick more or feel more fatigued if you don’t stay hydrated while being so busy. Especially, if you know you don’t get as much sleep as you should! Lack of sleep and dehydration are not a good combination.
In order to be the best we can be, we need to make sure our body is the best it can be.
5. Love Yourself First
Learn to love and put yourself first! Part of loving yourself is taking care of yourself like I said earlier because you can’t tend to everyone else for long if you’re not together. Make it a priority to do things that you like to do.
If you’re a workaholic, make sure you take vacation time in 2017. Time off for relaxation and rehabilitation is essential.
If you always put everyone before yourself, try to put yourself first this time around. It doesn’t mean you are any less caring or loving, but you have to love yourself first before you can love anyone else.
Journaling, which I talk about later, is a great method to self- reflect and clear out any negative thoughts. You can take 5- 10 minutes everyday to write down a few affirmations. Positive affirmations help you make positive changes in your life because they stand as concrete, specific statements to help you overcome negativity and self-sabotaging and turn positive thoughts into constructive action.
I am the architect of my life; I build its foundation and choose its contents.
6. Work Diligently
Having a goal and being talented are great, but they are nothing without hard work. You have to want to and be passionate about working hard towards your goals and putting effort into your talents. You may be a talented writer or public- speaker, but you do not want to stay at a plateau because you never pushed yourself to get to the next level.
People will want to work with you, if you have an admirable work ethic. To be honest, you will want to work with yourself when you have a great work ethic. It is not fun to be lazy and put little effort into something you want because then you will not ever get it. Or, you might get it because your “lucky.”
Successful people hate the word “lucky” because when you work hard and diligently for something it is not luck. You struggled and put 100% in everyday, and your hard work landed you the gig not luck. You shouldn’t ever have to leave it to being lucky because you didn’t put the work in.
And if I can tell you a little secret, when you are passionate about something you are more likely to want to work hard at it. So, shoot for that career path that is going to warm your heart everyday.
Aim for a career that you are motivated to do even on your days off.
This does not mean taking time for yourself is not important, but if you are still motivated to get up and work for just a hour to 2 hours on your days off that says something about how much you love what you do. Key word motivated not forced.
7. Welcome Success and Define it
Remember that affirmation earlier that says we are the architects of our lives? Don’t you just love that. We construct our lives and choose its content. Thus, we are in charge of our success! Too many times our own negativity and self-doubt hinders our path to success. So, stop doubting yourself and welcome the fact that you deserve to be successful.
You deserve to be successful.
Say that to yourself a few times right now and say that to yourself everyday. Embrace it because you deserve to know you are worthy and capable of great things. Define what success means to you and make it happen! It is not going to happen overnight, but lay the foundation so it will happen.
Also, do not allow rejections or the fear of failure to stand in your way of success. They will occur and they are important in making us stronger. But, do not allow any person or institution to take that spark away from you and make you think you are unworthy of success.
Failure inspires winners.

8. Be Happy and Allow Happiness
Even with all the money in the world and a booming business, if you are not happy you will not feel fulfilled. As humans emotions rule of lives, and despite having good thoughts it cannot overcome our emotions. For each person it is different, and you know when you are unhappy. Make finding things that make you happy a priority.
As we welcome success, we want to be able to enjoy it as well.
9. Write More and Journal
Writing is therapeutic and a great stress reliever. If you find that you are often stressed or you want to elude stress as much as possible try writing your thoughts out. Journaling has helped me free my mind because I keep a couple of different journals: personal, dance, and blogging.
My personal journal is where I jot down all of my emotions, troubles, and joyful moments. I use my blog journal or notebook for a place to jot down all ideas relevant to my blog. I am someone if I don’t write it down I will forget it. So, I also use my Notes in my phone to quickly write down any thoughts I have on the go and later I might transfer them to my journals.
To be successful and productive you need to organize your ideas and thoughts. If everything stays in your head, chances are you might forget something and it could have been a golden idea! That idea could have been a best-selling book idea and you would have never gotten the chance to put it to work!
10. Mind Your Money and Finances
Make making smart financial decisions a priority in the new year. No one likes to be stressed with financial burden and there are ways to avoid it. I strongly believe being in charge of our finances, staying out of debt, and learning how to acquire more wealth will help you reach that level of success you dream of. If you accompany strong financial habits with a boss like mentality you will be unstoppable.
